Mastery, Motivation, and Management: Unveiling Success Secrets with Barry Hearn

Meeting the Masters: Barry Hearn

My next guest is Barry Hearn.  I first met Barry when we were both playing golf at the Belfry, the Ryder Cup venue. We got into conversation and after some months of trying to find a spot in Barry's busy diary. I finally met up with him at the Waldorf Hotel in London, where I recorded the interview.

Let me tell you a bit about Barry.  Barry Hearn qualified as a chartered accountant in 1970, and spent several years with a major firm of international accountants before moving into the commercial world. After a period in the fashion industry and property development, became chairman of Locarno, snooker clubs in 1974, and began to involve the snooker hall chain in amateur tournament promotions.

In 1976, Steve Davis, the world famous snooker player began playing at the ROM for Locarno club, the two struck up a friendship which was to have a major influence on the world of snooker. In 1982, Riley leisure acquired the chain of Locarno snooker clubs, for 3.1 million, leaving Barry free to concentrate on the development of snooker both in the UK and overseas.

With the support of the match room professional players, Barry promoted snooker all over the world and has been particularly instrumental in the development of the game in the Far East.

From there he became a leading light in so many different sports bringing them to prominence, especially for TV audiences. Big time boxing, the world’s richest course fishing match Fishomania, the Marlin World Cup,  he developed the game of pool from a pub game into huge TV sport and the success of his Mosconi cup, Europe versus America match and the world nine ball pool Masters is a testament to the progress has been made and many more sports ands sportspeople (and audiences) have benefitted from Barry’s flair And savvy business sense.
